Second and Third-grade teachers expressed that students were struggling with text features and how they can assist with comprehension. While this is a library standard, students were having difficulty transferring information to the classroom.

As a result, the LMS spent extra time with these grade levels reviewing text features, using music (Flocabulary) to reinforce. Students then explored nonfiction texts, looking for text features throughout. This supplemented library standards and Florida BEST Standards in ELA.

According to test data from the past few years, poetry and figurative language are some of the weakest areas for our students.
As third-grade teachers began covering poetry in their classrooms, the LMS began supplementing the poetry lessons in the library.

In addition to reading selections from several of the media center's library books, students were given opportunities to write their own poetry, as well.
The LMS noticed an uptick in circulation in the poetry section as a result of this unit of study.

The LMS assisted 4th and 5th grade students and teachers with their Black History Research Projects.
Students used books from the Black History Displays in the media center and online resources to research famous people from Black History.
Students were able to email files to the LMS for printing.

Finished displays were then placed around the media center for students to peruse.
Students from all grade levels enjoyed viewing the projects.

As chair of the Literacy Committee, the LMS was tasked with coordinating the 4-H Public Speaking Contest for 4th and 5th grade students.
To make the experience the most beneficial for students, the LMS hosted a speech pep rally where students were introduced to tips on public speaking, shown a Flocabulary video to get them pumped about public speaking, and some topic ideas.

After the pep rally, the LMS maintained contact with 4th and 5th-grade teachers about student progress.
Students were able to seek and receive guidance from the LMS when needed.
The LMS helped procure judges for the school competition, created the program, and then also attended the district competition as additional support.

As part of a Peter Reynolds Author Study, students completed a STEM task to accompany the book Our Table.
The task helped build on structural techniques being taught in art.
Students were tasked with using only 10 index cards and a few pieces of tape to build a structure strong enough to hold up a full can of food.
The cans were then donated to a local food pantry.

To further coding instruction taking place in Technology Classes, students can use Osmo Coding Jam as one of their center choices during special area.

Sabal Palm teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators continue to note behavior issues regarding cooperative play and problem-solving.
As such, the LMS tries to utilize STEM, puzzles, and game play whenever possible.

Sportsmanship is another social-emotional need for our students.
Many students struggle with losing, playing fair, taking turns, and many of the other tasks associated with playing games and sports.
