Recently, good communication skills have been very difficult for students. The LMS spends a lot of class time reading books and showing videos that contribute to positive relationships. Grants have been funded to add puzzles and STEM materials to the media center.
These materials are used to get students working together to successfully complete a task. Much of student class time is spent listening to a whole group lesson, completing computer work, and assessments. This does not give students a lot of time to learn conflict resolution and proper communication skills when they get frustrated.
The LMS has noticed a huge difference with the number of students getting frustrated when things don't go their way. In 2021, students easily became frustrated and gave up when a task became too difficult. The LMS has noticed that students have better stamina and self-determination now when it comes to challenging tasks. They also do a better job of communicating ideas to their peers.
While students are still working on polite interaction, there has been definite improvement.

As part of our unit on research, the LMS teaches students about copyright and plagiarism. How to properly cite works is also discussed, briefly.
When 4th and 5th grade students began displaying their Black History presentations, the LMS noticed a lack of credit being given to the source of information or the photos taken from the internet.
The LMS worked with classroom teachers to present this information for future projects. (4th and 5th grade are part of the flex schedule and the LMS does not have as much time to do full lessons with them.)
Citing works and acknowledging websites is ingrained in daily lessons by the LMS. When reading a book, the LMS will note the copyright date and throughout the year remind students that no part of the book may be replicated because of copyright.
Copyright posters are also hanging in the production room as a reminder to teachers of the expectation that everyone follow copyright laws, even when duplicating classwork.

Sabal Palm is lucky to have a Technology Class as part of the special area rotation. The technology teacher fulfills the school needs on privacy, digital citizenship, and digital footprints.
Before testing, the LMS assists the technology teacher with review sessions, as time allows.
The LMS uses Kahoot, Quizlet, BrainPop Jr., and BrainPop to facilitate this.

As stated earlier, Sabal Palm has a Technology Class as part of the special area rotation.
The LMS works closely with the technology teacher to review needed skills, such as "Being a Good Digital Citizen" (utilizing Flocabulary), and Interland, an "adventure-packed online game that makes learning about digital safety and citizenship interactive and fun."
